A Father’s Father’s Day Story

A child is angry with their father, for some justifiable reasons, justifiable to the father. The child has no sympathy for the father’s justification; they’re just angry. It’s been many years, and that anger has grown, and the gap between them is greater.

When the father realizes that his reasons sound like excuses to the child, he understands that the child is angry. Fathers step up. Fathers realize that there is no more time to waste. Fathers will pick up the phone to make it right. Whether it’s a first-time father or a father of many, whether a son or a daughter’s father, they make it right.

So today, I write a Father’s Day story to say on behalf of all those fathers who didn’t say it: I’m sorry son, I’m sorry daughter, child of mine, I’m sorry. Can we talk for a minute? I just want us to get to know each other better. I’ll tell you my side of the story, and I’ll tell you the truth. 

Please, I’m asking for your forgiveness and to be invited into your life. My wrongdoings were not your fault. I did the crime, and I lost our time. I will no longer use the fact that I didn’t have my father because he didn’t have his father. I am stepping up today so that I, too, can celebrate Father’s Day.

Love you son, love you daughter, love you, child of mine.
