The infamous words of Popeye the sailor: “I am what I am and that’s all that I am.” Denzel Washington played Malcolm X in the movie Malcolm X by Spike Lee.
There’s a scene in the movie where Denzel is quoting one of Malcolm X’s speeches. Malcolm says, “So, I come to you today as I am, a Black Man.”
Malcolm X made a choice to define himself in that speech as a black man. He was describing himself based on his skin tone and the knowledge he had obtained all his life about his identity. Today, let’s go deeper. Human beings.
Men.
Women.
They have the freedom to choose. You can choose to be a doctor, a lawyer, a truck driver, a goat herder, a tree trimmer, a swimmer, a gambler, a dancer, or a karate expert.
Whatever you put your mind to and choose to implement, you can be that. But you are what you are and that’s all that you are. What are you?
