A Call To Duty

The Christmas holiday season is among us once again and we somehow feel the need to overindulge in the purchasing of gifts and seasonal well wishes. All in all wishing people well during the holiday season is a good thing and I’m sure no one can find fault in giving gifts.

We seem to think that this makes people happy and it somehow makes us happy. Really? Do we think that giving a gift to someone we love or to a coworker or even a stranger makes us happy? Because we feel the need to give a gift on a specific day that’s been deemed appropriate for giving gifts?

Giving gifts and well wishes out of obligation or duty because of a designated day for it somehow doesn’t feel right. Happy holidays, Mary Christmas, happy birthday, happy Thanksgiving. We have become so programmed to feel a certain way on the holidays, that on non-holidays we are so thoughtless of other people’s feelings, situations and circumstances that it’s obvious we really don’t care.

In November and December we have no problem shelling out $5 or $10 to a homeless person when they ask could you spare some change. In January through October that same homeless person could ask for some change and we would have a whole different attitude about given up that same $5 or $10.

Are the holidays a true reflection of who we are? or is it the other 10 months of the year? We have a human obligation to our fellow man to be consistent in showing humanity.

Let’s make every month about being filled with the holiday spirit. 2019 is just around the corner and we have a call to duty, To be more humane to our fellow brothers and sisters.
