Just when you think you’ve heard everything, you hear something that makes you say,” did I just hear that or did that person just say that for real”?
That was my question to myself and I’m sure many others as well when we heard the outlandish comment by Kanye West in regards to slavery being a choice of the slaves. At first I just brushed it off as another one of Kanye’s rants and mental breakdowns that he is well known for.

But after hearing it a second time on the news and I saw his expression when he made the comment, he really believed what he was saying was true. It wasn’t like he was talking on a hot microphone that he thought was off. Or he was in a private conversation with someone and they leaked what he said.
He was in an open interview when he made that outlandish statement and said what he said with conviction. You would think anyone who would utter such a negative, ignorant and insensitive statement would be uneducated. But, this is not Kanye’s case his mother was a educator, an professor at Chicago State University and I’m sure she would be highly ashamed and embarrassed, if she were still here to hear the insensitive comments that he made.
But people do and say things for a lot of reasons of which we know not. So, I will chalk this up as stress on a young man who has been trying to find his way for a very long time, without the proper guidance. Popularity, fame and fortune are a cruel mistress and could sometimes lead you down a very stressful and lonely life.
Sometimes the more people you have around you the lonelier you are and what you really need is someone you can truly trust in your corner to share your troubles. Music is a stress reliever and a storyteller, So I would like to make a recommendation for you Mr. Kanye West. A song by Nina Simone called strange fruit. Give it a listen and allow the words to enlighten you and to relieve some of your stress. Listen to the words and see if slaves would have chosen to be slaves.
Smoke that over.
