Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice

Every now and then, when I’m out and about walking among the day walkers, I am sometimes asked, “Hey man, when did you become a Muslim?”

I answer, “I’m not a Muslim. Why did you ask that?”

And he says, “Because you ordered your sandwich without bacon.”

{Time lapses out}

Now, I could go into full detail about how delicious pork is. Having eaten pork—and the best of pork that you could eat—let’s get into the top shelf of pork. Pork that has been prepared simply for its deliciousness.

Homegrown pig. Hand-picked back on the farm, pulled out of the ranks for some special treatment.

First, a nice hosing down with cool water to get all that mud and dirt off. Something to eat? Here’s some nice fresh hardcore feed for you—no more slop. How about some cool, fresh water? No more of that brown slop you’ve been slurping on for the last six months.

A few days pass, and we up the ante. You still get fresh water, but now you’re getting nice vegetables—celery, tomatoes, squash, green peppers, and onions. All the nice things a good piglet needs to make his body all good and tasty inside. Wash it down with a cool drink of water.

“You got a good night, piggy.”

A few days go by, and life gets better and better for piggy. “I’m getting watermelon, apples, oranges, and pineapples. Pineapple? Yes, even pineapples. I can’t believe this!”

A few more days of this good living—all the fresh water I can drink—I must be in hog heaven, says piggy.

And then the hammer comes down.

“I’ve got your head on my plate, piggy,” prepared in a way that only culinary chefs could master.

The flavors. The texture. The aroma from the kitchen—how good you smell, piggy. You recognize the smell when you open the door.

“Somebody loves me.”

They don’t call this the other white meat for nothing.

Applewood-smoked, thick pepper bacon.

A properly prepared pig is an abundance of flavors. You think I don’t miss that?

Yeah, I am reminded every day that it’s the little things that trip us up. I am also reminded that I can do all things through Christ, who gives me my strength.

So, I stand.

{Time lapse back in}

Turkey sandwich. No bacon. Add avocado.

Now, smoke that over.
