Thank you for your service has become the standard go to phrase when we encounter service men or women home from their tour of duty. I don’t know how and when thank you for your service became such a cliché statement to offer our past and present veterans and war heroes.
We see and hear it a lot when we see a Marine or Army veteran on his or her way home from a tour. Someone walks up and hugs them and says thank you for your service, and then another one, and another, Now thank you for your service is almost as cliché as a #.
We must all understand that the sacrifice that the members of our Armed Forces make is a real one. So in our haste to simply say thank you for your service, let’s understand what service they’re providing for all of us. That service is life and death, a choice that every military personnel chooses to put their lives on the line for our safety and security.
We must not get caught up in trivial arguments such as why a football player takes a knee. A football player taking a knee to protest police brutality is in no way disrespectful to the troops. What’s disrespectful to the troops is taking their sacrifice for granted.
So let’s stop taking our troops for granted and show them that we are human and have compassion and understand the sacrifice that they are making for our safety and security.
I suppose that thank you for your service is okay when it’s genuine. Add a little humanity to it, something like, I am praying for the safe arrival home for all your fellow soldiers, and may God bless all. Or however the spirit leads you.
We need to start allowing the spiritual side of us to reveal our humanity in more aspects of our lives today. To a young man named Justice in the armed forces, I pray for you and your squads for a safe return home to your family’s and God bless you all.
Take some time to pray for a soldier’s safe return home, and thank them for their service when you know that they are at home safe.
