Where I’m From? Some would say, “Fresh off a negger ass” if you asked at the wrong place and at the wrong time.
We are all a product of our environment—whether bad or good, we are who we are. Nature versus nurture. Flight versus fight. Our geographical location has more to do with who we are than most of us know.
Thank God for the nurturing of a loving mother, father, brothers, and sisters. Without the love of a strong family, my nature would have destroyed nations. The programming of the people in my neighborhood, where I’m from, is obvious to me today.
The brick and mortar of higher education factories did exactly what they were programmed to do for many of us. But I had a praying mother and father who used a strong word and a disciplined hand to keep me on Straight Street.
A disciplined hand was necessary where I’m from. Unfortunately, a lot of us missed out on those handouts, and now we ask the question: Where are they now?
The streets will eat you up and spit you out if you’re not careful where I’m from. “Only the strong survive” is what we were told, but in reality, the streets will take you out if you’re not careful. The strong need to be wise as well.
You must be equipped where I’m from—equipped with skills that aren’t taught in any book. You must learn in the streets and pray that an OG will hook you up with some wisdom and knowledge so you can navigate these streets for survival.
You could become prey where I’m from if you’re not careful. Always keep your head on a swivel and one hand in your pocket.I have lost many brothers where I’m from. A toast to my brothers who are not here.
I got brothers, yes, I got brothers where I’m from—three of whom were right there when I was born. So don’t mess with them, and don’t mess with me, because I got brothers where I’m from.
The black sheep of a large, loving family, led by a father and a mother, trained up in the way we should go. You ask me where I’m from? So, I’ll tell you, Englewood and that’s all I have to say about that.
Love us or hate us—it makes no difference to us. The old saying goes, Can anything good come from Englewood? My answer is yes—because I got brothers from Englewood and I’m from Englewood too.
